Crews battle early afternoon porch fire

On Monday, January 18th, 2010, the Morton, Rutledge, and Swarthmore Fire Companies were alerted to 234 President Ave in Rutledge Borough for a dwelling fire. Seconds after dispatch, a 2nd page went out reporting a working fire at that location. 13-13 (M.Kopp) contacted Fireboard and advised to dispatch R.I.T. 08 (Prospect Park). 11-9B (Kemp) went enroute and was advised that 43-9 (Holmes Fire Chief) was on scene reporting a porch fire with fire extending to the 1st and 2nd floors. 11-1 (M.Kopp) went enroute with a staffing of 4 and was advised to pick up the hydrant at Melrose Terrace and President Ave. Tower 14 (Swarthmore) went enroute and was advised to take the front of the building.

11-9B arrived and assumed President Ave Command. As units arrived on scene, the fire was being contained with a garden hose by 14-9A (Augustine). Tower 14 went in service with 1 3/4" and began suppression. 11-1 established a supply line and supplied Tower 14. 11, 13, 14 crews began to open up the interior of the porch and noted minor extension inside.

Command placed the fire under control 20 minutes into the assignment with all hands checking for extension.

Fire is being investigated by Rutledge Car 1 (Borsch) and Swarthmore PD.
